For thick smudges, don't use a brush too small. Use blocks of color to create volume. Smudges are more important in the early stages; the brush is less important.
Eyelashes are not important; any brush can be used.
Don't overdo the smudges later; a moderate amount is fine. Textured brushes only cover up flaws; revealing them will make the process go faster. Build more volume. Texture in the later stages is built on volume and color.
